EcoFlow STREAM AC 5000 Review: The Plug-In Battery That Talks to Home Assistant

https://youtu.be/ksvnIOyeLkI

If you’ve got solar panels, you already know the feeling: watching your feed-in compensation shrink year after year while your inverter keeps happily dumping surplus power back to the grid for next to nothing. That’s the exact problem EcoFlow is going after with its newest release, the STREAM AC 5000 โ€” a plug-in home battery designed to bolt onto an existing solar setup without ripping anything out. I tested it for a few weeks, including hooking it up to my own SolarEdge system, and here’s my honest take โ€” including how it plays with Home Assistant.

What Is the EcoFlow STREAM AC 5000?

The STREAM AC 5000 is built to sit alongside a solar system you already own. It works with your current inverter and third-party smart meters โ€” Shelly, HomeWizard, and Tibber are all supported, alongside EcoFlow’s own P1 meter. EcoFlow also states it plays nicely with third-party inverters wired directly into your home circuit, which matters if you’ve already committed to a solar brand and don’t want to tear it out just to add storage. In my case, that held up: I run [LINK: product name] SolarEdge and had no compatibility issues.

The headline number is 5024 Wh of usable capacity โ€” all of it usable, with no held-back buffer. That’s roughly enough to carry an average Dutch household through an evening of cooking, lights, and laundry on stored solar instead of grid power.

Output Is Where It Gets Interesting

3000 W of AC output sounds like marketing language until you realize that’s genuinely enough for a washing machine or dishwasher โ€” appliances that trip up a lot of smaller battery boxes. But there’s a catch EcoFlow is upfront about: you only get the full 3000 W when there’s simultaneous solar generation, or once it’s hardwired into your fuse box by an electrician. Straight out of the box on a cloudy day, running through a wall socket, you’re working with 800 W. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing before you buy.

There’s also a peak-shaving mode: if your household briefly spikes past what your grid connection is rated for โ€” EV charger, heat pump, and oven all kicking in at once, for example โ€” the battery covers the difference instead of tripping anything. It’s a clever workaround, though I’d argue upgrading your fuse box is the more sustainable long-term fix.

Build Quality and Safety

This is where the STREAM AC 5000 quietly does more than it gets credit for. It’s rated IP65, so it’s genuinely fine mounted outdoors, in a shed, or in an unheated garage โ€” not just a climate-controlled utility room. EcoFlow lists 15 layers of protection against overcurrent, overheating, and short circuits, backed by a 10-year warranty. The cells are LiFePO4, rated for 10,000 charge cycles at better than 60% retention โ€” on a roughly one-cycle-a-day pattern, that works out to something like 27 years of realistic lifespan. It’s also the most compact home battery I’ve tested that still carries this much capacity, at just under 45 kilos.

Setup: Do You Need an Electrician?

For the base unit, no. It’s a wall-mount design โ€” plug it into an existing socket and pair it with the EcoFlow app. No rewiring required for the standard install. Higher output configurations, or anything routed directly into the distribution board, are where EcoFlow explicitly recommends a certified electrician. That’s true of plug-in home batteries generally, not just this one.

The App and Home Assistant Integration

The EcoFlow app gives you a live view of what’s being generated, stored, and used, with three operating modes: a custom schedule, a self-consumption mode that prioritizes your own solar, and an Intelligent Mode+ that factors in weather forecasts and dynamic tariffs to automatically time charging and discharging. Onboarding was flawless, though the system needs about seven days to learn your usage pattern before it generates its own strategies. Worth knowing: Intelligent Mode+ is cloud-based, so your data goes to EcoFlow. There’s also a local mode that keeps traffic on your home network, at the cost of losing AI mode, dynamic tariff sync, solar forecasting, and OTA updates.

There’s no official Home Assistant integration for STREAM devices yet โ€” but the community has already solved it. The HACS EcoFlow Energy integration picks up STREAM units and exposes entities and controls, and contributors shuette42 and slaapyhoofd got STREAM AC 5000 support working within days of launch. That means you can pull battery info, view power flow, and build your own charging and discharging strategies in Home Assistant โ€” using something like EMHASS for energy management optimization. A separate HACS EcoFlow BLE integration exists for fully local control, though it didn’t expose sensors yet at the time of testing.

Scaling Up

One STREAM AC 5000 stacks with up to two expansion batteries, taking a single unit to 15 kWh, and a full system supports up to six host units for a maximum of 90 kWh and 18 kW output. EcoFlow’s bundles โ€” base unit, one expansion battery, or two โ€” all work out cheaper than buying pieces separately later.

The Downsides

Two things stood out during testing. First, the app has no history graph for charging and discharging โ€” you can see the current value, but not how the battery performed over the day (Home Assistant fills that gap for now). Second, the unit runs hot during charging โ€” I measured up to 53ยฐC. EcoFlow told me that’s normal and it cools quickly once fully charged, but it’s worth knowing going in.

Verdict

Early-bird pricing puts the base STREAM AC 5000 at โ‚ฌ1,399, down from โ‚ฌ1,699, with extras like a free P1 meter for early orders. If you’ve already got solar and you’re watching your feed-in compensation shrink, this is a genuinely low-friction way to start using more of your own power. The IP65 rating and 10-year warranty mean it’s flexible about placement, and Home Assistant support means it doesn’t have to stay a closed box even if the official app feels limited. If you don’t have solar yet, or need whole-home backup during outages, look further up EcoFlow’s STREAM lineup or at a bigger inverter-based system instead. For retrofitting storage onto an existing solar setup, though, it does the job well.
