A New Home Dashboard Experience

The most visible change in Home Assistant 2026.2 is the new Home Dashboard. After being in testing for a few months, it’s now the default dashboard for new users. While you can still create custom overview dashboards, the Home Dashboard is what first-time users will see when starting with Home Assistant.

One practical improvement is the Devices Discovered button, which immediately shows newly found devices and allows you to add them directly to your dashboard. Editing areas has also become more intuitive, making it easier to add climate sensors and other entities without switching interfaces.

Apps Replace Add-ons

Another major change is the renaming of Add-ons to Apps. The Add-on Store is now the App Store, complete with an Install App button and the same support for custom repositories. While this is largely a naming change, the interface feels faster and more polished overall.

Global Search Comes to Home Assistant

Home Assistant now includes a global search, accessible via Ctrl+K or Cmd+K. This lets you search for commands, entities, devices, areas, and navigation options from one place. Existing shortcuts for entities and commands still work, so this addition enhances usability without removing familiar workflows.

Device Database and Analytics

The new Device Database is one of the more interesting additions. When enabled, it anonymously sends aggregated data about your devices to Home Assistant. This helps build a public database where users can check whether specific devices are compatible before buying them.

It’s worth noting that only devices supported by Home Assistant Core are included. Devices supported exclusively via HACS won’t appear in the database.

Automation Improvements

With new options enabled in System Labs, Home Assistant 2026.2 adds more purpose-specific triggers and conditions to the automation editor. These include new calendar events, presence detection, and vacuum-related triggers, along with many additional conditions for different device types.

New Cards and Dashboard Tweaks

A new Distribution Card allows you to visualize things like energy usage distribution across your home. The dashboard also supports more color customization, making features like Google Calendar integration easier to read at a glance.

Buttons can now be added directly to the dashboard header, allowing quick actions such as turning off all lights in a room with a single tap.

Integrations and Other Changes

This release includes several notable integration updates, including Cloudflare backups, ESPHome support for water heating devices, Music Assistant enhancements, and continued improvements to the Reolink integration.

As always, there are also backward-incompatible changes, such as updates to sensor group behavior and HVAC mode handling, which may require adjustments after upgrading.

Should You Try the Beta?

Home Assistant 2026.2 beta introduces meaningful improvements, especially in usability and structure. While it already feels polished, beta releases can still introduce breaking changes, so caution is advised for production systems.
