Why Automate a Chicken Coop?
If you keep chickens, you know the struggle:
- Early mornings to open the coop
- Late evenings to lock everything up
- Roosters waking up the whole neighborhood
Automation solves all of that:
- Door opens only after a set time
- Door closes automatically at sunset
- Chickens stay safe from predators
Why I Chose the Omlet Auto Door
I looked at several DIY solutions and cheap automatic doors, but most:
- Require custom electronics
- Don’t support Home Assistant
- Work only with proprietary controllers
The Omlet Auto Door stood out because:

- Works via WiFi (with power adapter)

Installation Experience
The installation is refreshingly simple:
- Mount the door frame with four screws
- Connect the control unit and optional light
- Plug in the power adapter
Even with shaky hands, the process was easy and accessible. No advanced tools required.
Omlet App Overview
The Omlet app allows you to:
- Open and close the door manually
- Control the coop light
- Use light-based or time-based schedules
- Check logs, WiFi signal, and firmware
However, you can’t combine time-based and light-based logic in the app alone—which is where Home Assistant comes in.
Home Assistant Integration
Using HACS, you can install the Omlet Smart Coop integration.
Once connected, Home Assistant exposes:
- Door control (cover entity)
- Light control
- Battery, WiFi, and sensor data
This allows for advanced automations, like:
- Open door at 9:00 AM
- Close door when outdoor light drops below a set lux value
- Delay closing and turn on coop light first
This setup prevents early closing on cloudy days and keeps the coop safe.
Final Verdict
The Omlet Auto Door isn’t the cheapest solution—but it is one of the best if you want:
- Reliability
- Home Assistant integration
