Reolink Argus PT Ultra Review: Battery 4K Security Camera with Solar Power & Home Hub

Hi!

Reolink has been expanding its smart home security lineup rapidly, and the Argus PT Ultra, combined with the Reolink Home Hub and Solar Panel 2, is designed to be a fully wireless, subscription-free security solution.

I tested this complete kit around my home to see how well it works in real-world conditionsโ€”and while the hardware is impressive, setup taught me a valuable lesson about Wi-Fi coverage.

Reolink Argus PT Ultra Camera

The Argus PT Ultra is a solid, well-built outdoor camera featuring:

  • 355ยฐ pan & 140ยฐ tilt
  • 4K (8MP) resolution
  • ColorX full-color night vision
  • Infrared night vision + adjustable spotlight
  • AI detection for people, vehicles & pets
  • Two-way audio + built-in alarm

What makes this camera special is that itโ€™s battery powered, allowing placement almost anywhereโ€”as long as Wi-Fi reaches it.

Battery capacity is a massive 20,000 mAh, capable of:

  • ~8 days at 12 hours/day usage
  • ~4 days of continuous recording

Mounting options include wall, ceiling, and even a strap mount for trees or poles.

Wi-Fi Reality Check

At maximum 4K quality, Wi-Fi range matters. When placed too far from my access point, the camera struggled. Lowering the recording mode (Clear / Balanced / Fluent) solved the issueโ€”but this is something to keep in mind with any Wi-Fi battery camera.

Reolink Solar Panel 2

To avoid manual charging, Reolink includes the Solar Panel 2:

  • Adjustable mounting bracket
  • Strap mounting option
  • Simple plug-and-play installation

In direct sunlight, it recharged the battery by 5โ€“10% per hour. During testing, the camera stayed at 100% battery on sunny daysโ€”even with regular motion events.

Reolink Home Hub

The Reolink Home Hub acts as the heart of the system:

  • Ethernet connection for stability
  • Supports up to 8 cameras
  • Comes with 64GB microSD (expandable to 512GB)
  • Fully local storage (no subscription)

The Hub centralizes live view, playback, and notifications while improving efficiencyโ€”especially for battery cameras.

Home Assistant Integration

This is the key question for many smart-home users.

With the Home Hub:
โœ… Automatically detected in Home Assistant
โœ… All connected cameras appear and work correctly

Without the Hub:
โŒ The Argus PT Ultra is detected but cannot be added (for now)

So if Home Assistant is important to you, the Hub is required.

Pricing

  • Regular bundle price: ~โ‚ฌ400
  • Current discounted price: โ‚ฌ299.99
(Includes 2 cameras, 2 solar panels, and the Home Hub)

Links to the bundle are available via Reolink and Amazon.

Pros & Cons

โœ… Pros

  • True wireless 4K PT camera
  • Excellent battery life + solar charging
  • Full-color night vision
  • AI detection reduces false alerts
  • No mandatory subscription
  • Local storage with privacy
  • Home Assistant support (with Hub)

โŒ Cons

  • Strong Wi-Fi required at full resolution
  • Alarm speaker is not very loud
  • Home Assistant requires the Hub

Final Verdict

If you want a flexible, battery-powered, no-subscription security system, the Reolink Argus PT Ultra + Home Hub + Solar Panel 2 is an excellent optionโ€”especially for Home Assistant users willing to use the Hub.

Just make sure your Wi-Fi coverage is readyโ€ฆ or donโ€™t make the same mistake I did ๐Ÿ˜‰
