tado° X Review: Smart Heating with Matter & Home Assistant (vs Honeywell Evohome)

For years, my home has been heated using Honeywell Evohome with 16 radiator thermostat knobs. It worked reliably, but the interface was dated and adjustments were never intuitive. When tado° asked me to test their new tado° X smart heating system, I decided to fully replace my Evohome setup and see how it compares—especially with Home Assistant and Matter support.

Hardware Overview

The tado° X system consists of:

  • Wireless Receiver X (connected to your boiler)
  • Radiator Thermostat X knobs
  • Wireless Temperature Sensor X (optional, ideal for large rooms)

All devices support Matter, making them easy to integrate into smart home platforms like Home Assistant.

The thermostat knobs feature:

  • A premium matte display
  • Rechargeable USB-C batteries (up to 1 year)
  • Local schedules that work even without internet

Installation Experience

Installing the Wireless Receiver X took about 15 minutes. The tado° app guides you step by step, whether you have an OpenTherm boiler or a simple on/off setup.

Radiator thermostat installation was straightforward. Each knob includes adapters for nearly every radiator valve. Pairing is done via QR codes, and each device is assigned to a room in the app.

The Wireless Temperature Sensor is perfect for rooms with multiple radiators, ensuring consistent heating based on a central temperature reading.

tado° App & Features

The tado° app focuses on simplicity:

  • Room-based temperature control
  • Weekly schedules per room
  • Temperature & humidity history
  • Energy usage insights (Energy IQ)

Some advanced features like geofencing and open window detection require the Auto-Assist subscription, but notifications still work without it.

Home Assistant & Matter Integration

tado° X shines when combined with Home Assistant.

Using Matter, each thermostat knob can be:

  • Added individually
  • Controlled directly
  • Used in automations

This allows you to:

  • Create subscription-free geofencing
  • Lower heating automatically when doors or windows open
  • Build advanced heating logic using sensors and presence detection

Compared to the legacy tado° integration, Matter support is far more powerful.

Heating Performance

tado° X heats rooms more gradually than Honeywell Evohome. While Evohome often heats aggressively, tado° X ramps up slowly and steadily. After a short adjustment period, my home feels more comfortable—and I expect lower gas usage over time.

Schedules are stored locally, so heating continues even without an internet connection.

Pricing

  • Wireless Smart Thermostat X: €199.99 (includes temp sensor)
  • Radiator Thermostat X: €99.99 each (discounts for multi-packs)
  • Auto-Assist subscription: €3.99/month or €29.99/year (optional)

Final Verdict

The tado° X system is:

  • More modern and better designed than Honeywell Evohome
  • Easier to use and configure
  • More powerful when combined with Home Assistant

If you care about design, usability, and Matter support, tado° X is an excellent choice. If you prefer a one-time purchase without subscriptions and don’t mind a dated UI, Honeywell Evohome still works—but feels outdated in comparison.

With Home Assistant, you can unlock the full potential of tado° X without subscriptions, making it my preferred smart heating solution going forward.
